Changing the Code to your Keysafe or Digital Doorlock
We understand that the thought of having a code that doesn’t change between guests can be concerning. In an ideal world, each Guest would get a unique code to access your home that expires shortly after their stay. In practice, the reality is that changing the Keysafe/Digital Doorlock code too often is not feasible with the current technology of keysafes, door codes and booking software. If/when software exists that can change the code at an appropriate moment and communicate that automatically to our Booking System, cleaners and owners (and not rely on intermittent Wi-Fi access) – it would allow this to happen.
Our approach to your security is multi-layered to ‘protect’ access to your home:
- All Guests are vetted to reduce the risk to of having the ‘wrong’ people stay in your home. The way this is done has changed over the years, and the process depends on how they book your home. See Vetting Guests for more information.
- All communication that Guests receive prior to arriving to your home contains wording to infer that the code is unique for their stay:
“The code has been set for your stay as xxx”
“If you arrive early and the code does not work, please contact the office...”
- In addition, if a Guest contacts us just after they check out, requesting to go back to the home (usually for an item they’ve left behind), we tell them “Let me check if the code has been changed yet” before letting them back in.
- If the Cleaner’s report indicates that a Guest would not be welcome back, we would of course deal with any issues related to that stay (see Claiming Funds from Guests for more information) and we would change the code for your keysafe (or arrange a handyman to do that on your behalf) to ensure they can’t come back.
- To balance the concern you may have with the Keysafe code/Digital Lock, we would be ok if you were to change it no more than once every 3-4 months (or ask us and we can arrange for a handyman to do that for you). If you do so, please inform us in writing of the new code, and be mindful that we would prefer 72h notice before the next Guests check in, to allow us to make the necessary changes in our booking system so the pre-arrival communication to the Guests has been updated.
- The reality is that for physical keys (usually obtained from a keysafe), if a Guest planned to come back to your home, copying the key during their stay is much more feasible than a Guest assuming they can access your keysafe after they check out. Please note though, in our ~25 years' experience, we have never had a case where it has been proven that a Guest has returned to a home and let themselves in, either with a copy of a key or by using an old keysafe code.
